Twenty-three years ago today, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets was published in the United Kingdom. This is the second book in J.K. Rowling’s beloved and magical Harry Potter series. SYNOPSIS: Harry longs to return to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and see his best friends Ron and Hermione again. Most of the action in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets occurs at Hogwarts during the years 1992 and 1993. The realism of the non-magical Muggle world, particularly the Dursleys' home, dramatically contrasts with the fantastical possibilities presented at Hogwarts where the medieval castle's structure is constantly changing to accommodate its inhabitants. The Whomping Willow, seen here for the first time, will be explained in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. The Willow, and the passage it guards, will appear again in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. The way wands behave when broken, and how and whether they can be mended, is touched upon throughout this book. As Harry, Ron, and Hermione set out to find the secret chamber and slay the beast, speculation is rife that one of the heirs of Salazar Slytherin, the co-founder of the school, opened the chamber as a warning against the presence of "mudbloods" (magic-users of impure lineage) at the school -- and that the culprit may be fellow student Draco Warner Bros. Pictures. At the end of both the film and book, Harry comes up with a clever plan involving a dirty sock to deceive Lucius Malfoy. The Hogwarts school governor unintentionally hands Lockhart spends the entirety of the story giving Harry pointers on how to handle fame, but Harry is entirely uninterested. It is no surprise that Lockhart is a fraud; he does exactly what the novel seems to warn against.
