My mondeo tdci 130 has developed a noise like air escaping when accelerating hard from about 1800 rpm. There doesnt seem to be a loss of power as yet but the engine feels rougher. Show More
Put all the coils, boots and springs in the parts bin for troubleshooting. 1997-2006 Expedition & Navigator - Sluggish/lack of power under hard acceleration - So I have a relatively new to me '06 with the 5.4 and it has around 85,000 miles on it. While normal driving or idealing the engine runs fine and smooth.
This noise is more noticeable on acceleration because the engine is working harder, making the noise louder. With an exhaust leak, the muffling of the noise is cut short, making the noise louder. Worn or otherwise compromised drive belts are a common cause of noises when accelerating. There are also some more technical causes to point out

Sadly a very occurrence with Ford's common rail setup, essentially you've used up nearly all the fuel in the rail and the pump isn't able to supply it fast enough. Assuming its been regularly serviced and the fuel filter is good then typically its caused by the injectors
On the last trip a few weeks ago, about 1.5 hours into driving, doing 80 mph in 6th gear the car suddenly lost all power (having 'skipped' with a momentary power loss accelerating from 2nd gear uphill on a slip road shortly before), Engine Malfunction Light came on and we got to the hard shoulder.
